Red Rock practice screen: allocate the investment budget

McKinsey Red Rock Study (Redrock)

In McKinsey Solve, preparation providers describe Red Rock as a connected data study: one Redrock Study with Investigation, Analysis and Report stages, then six standalone Cases on a shared clock of roughly 35 minutes. McKinsey publishes no Red Rock blueprint, so treat that format as reported and let your own tutorial decide.

  • Pick the evidence that answers the question, with its unit and period
  • Percentage change, percentage points and weighted rates
  • Choose the chart that shows the conclusion

Your free Red Rock practice: the full Study (Investigation, three Analysis calculations, report, chart), then six Cases. A 35-minute advisory practice clock; 13 scored responses worth 36 points. The worked debrief includes highlighted calculations and charts.

Sea Wolf practice screen: compare cultures against site rules

McKinsey Sea Wolf game (Seawolf)

McKinsey publishes no Sea Wolf specification for Solve. Preparation providers describe an ocean treatment game: you select microbes, compare their values with each site’s ranges, account for desirable and undesirable traits, and your choices shape the pool for the final treatment. The skill is a constrained combination, not biology.

  • Remove microbes that break a trait rule first
  • Turn average ranges into sum ranges
  • Check the whole trio, not the strongest microbe

Your free Sea Wolf practice: all three sites on a 30-minute Simulation clock: set the profile, classify every culture, four prospect rounds, then a three-culture treatment. The worked debrief includes constraint and treatment visuals.

Sustainable Futures Lab practice screen: choose Learning or Simulation mode

McKinsey Sustainable Futures Lab (SFL)

Preparation providers describe Sustainable Futures Lab as decisions under uncertainty: you set priorities, weigh stakeholders and revise earlier plans when new information arrives. They report more than one SFL workflow in circulation, and McKinsey publishes no SFL rubric, so practise the decision process rather than a screen sequence.

  • Rank actions by objective, dependency and cost
  • Answer a stakeholder objection without inventing certainty
  • Revise the plan when one fact changes

Your free SFL Classic and Island practice: one full Classic run with all 13 linked decisions and no countdown, plus one full Island run with onboarding and all three project days on a 30-minute Simulation clock. Reviews include decision and dependency diagrams in Classic, and evidence chains, placement maps and team feedback in Island.

McKinsey Solve 2026: format, timing and rules

McKinsey Solve is the gamified problem-solving assessment in McKinsey’s consultant recruiting, considered together with the rest of your application. Your invitation states the total length; candidates report 65, 85 and 95 minute versions. Each task opens with an untimed tutorial, and McKinsey says you need no business knowledge or gaming experience.

Games
Preparation providers describe Red Rock, Sea Wolf and Sustainable Futures Lab. Your invitation names your modules.
Device
PC or Mac that passes the technical check. Phones and tablets are not the supported route.
Not allowed
Outside applications, websites, AI tools, prepared notes, screenshots or help from anyone.
Support
Technical faults go to Solve support the moment they happen. Deadlines and accommodations go to your recruiter.

McKinsey Ecosystem Building game

Ecosystem Building is a game name many candidates search for alongside Solve. McKinsey’s public Solve page does not list which games a sitting contains, and we do not offer an Ecosystem Building simulation or claim its current rules. If your invitation names it, its tutorial is your rulebook.

McKinsey Solve questions, answered.

Can I try the McKinsey Solve games for free?

Yes. Try one complete run of each of our four practice formats: Red Rock, Sea Wolf, SFL Classic and SFL Island. Start without an account, then create a free account to finish and keep your score, points breakdown and worked debrief with visual explanations. No payment is required for these first runs or their worked reviews. More simulations and Learning mode come in one-time game packs or the Solve pack. Practice and accounts are on Road to Offer.

How long is the McKinsey Solve game in 2026?

McKinsey states the total length in each candidate's invitation, and each task opens with an untimed tutorial. Candidate reports on preparation sites mention 65, 85 and 95 minute invitations, but those reports do not map reliably to a list of games. Red Rock alone is reported at roughly 35 minutes. Reserve your stated time plus setup margin.

Is McKinsey Solve proctored? Does it use your camera?

The Solve-specific FAQ does not mention a camera. McKinsey's general assessment-integrity page says candidates should use one screen, be on camera and use only pen and paper for notes and calculations. Outside applications, websites, AI tools, prepared notes and screenshots are prohibited. Follow your invitation and on-screen instructions, and ask your recruiter before test day if anything is unclear.

How do I pass McKinsey Solve?

McKinsey publishes no passing score and considers Solve together with the rest of your application. What you control is the method: select the right evidence and keep its units in Red Rock, check the whole combination against every rule in Sea Wolf, and tie each decision to the stated objective in Sustainable Futures Lab. Rehearse an unfamiliar interface before test day so the real tutorials feel familiar.

What score do I need to pass McKinsey Solve?

The official sources we reviewed publish no universal cutoff, score range or scoring formula. Some candidates report receiving a numerical score or decile after asking their recruiter, but that is not a promised policy. A practice score is feedback on an original exercise, not a hiring prediction.

When do McKinsey Solve results come out?

McKinsey does not publish one universal results timeline. Use the date or window your recruiter or candidate portal gives you, and contact them once if that window passes. Silence after you submit is not a verdict.

Can I retake McKinsey Solve?

The official sources we reviewed publish no retake policy. If the assessment fails technically, contact Solve support at once: support may reset your session or offer extra time, case by case. If you have not started, the August 2025 FAQ lets you pick a new time slot from your original link. After a rejection, ask your recruiter about reapplication timing.

Does everyone get a McKinsey Solve invitation?

The current official public sources do not publish an invitation rate or say that every applicant receives Solve. Some recruiting programs tell their applicants they will get it, but that is not a McKinsey-wide rule. An invitation does not guarantee an interview, and it does not prove you passed a resume screen.

What kind of math is on McKinsey Solve?

The math we train for Red Rock is percentage change, percentage points, weighted or pooled rates and choosing the chart that fits the data. Sea Wolf ranges are averages across a set of microbes, which are faster to check as sums. Providers describe an on-screen calculator in Red Rock; outside calculator apps are prohibited during the live assessment.

Is there a McKinsey Solve answers PDF or cheat sheet?

Not an official one. McKinsey does not publish answers, and prepared notes are prohibited during the live assessment. An answer list from someone else's sitting describes their scenario, not yours. Our guides work through original Red Rock, Sea Wolf and Sustainable Futures Lab questions with every answer explained, so you learn the method instead.

Is this the official McKinsey Solve assessment?

No. We offer independent preparation using original exercises. We are not affiliated with McKinsey, and our practice games are not copies of the live assessment.

Which Solve games should I prepare for?

Start with the modules named in your invitation, then follow the live tutorial. Our four practice formats are Red Rock, Sea Wolf, SFL Classic and SFL Island. Each has one complete free run. Our free Solve plan uses your invitation length and test date to give dated practice steps for up to 28 days; a free account is needed to view and save it. Your invitation and tutorial take precedence over formats discussed online.

Your first run of each format is free.
